Location:Greenham
Common Western Enclosure Session:30-Jun-2017 06:00 to
10:20hrs Headlines:It had been a bit of a
struggle this month, with the recent poor weather and few captures, motivation
has been an issue. On seeing the weather forecast for this week I had all but
written off any chance of ringing and directed my attention elsewhere.
Yesterday the weather forecast improved so it being the last day of June I thought I
would do a session. Glad I did as we captured an immature (speckle plumage)
Redstart. It is the earliest returning Redstart we have ever captured here,
most are captured late August and September. As it was speckled, like
a big Robin with a russet red tail, it may have fledged quite close by. Nice
to capture the Blue Tit ringed this year as a pulli by Gina and the Greenham
Nest Recorder team in a nest box in Sandleford Copse just over the back. Other
than this, one or two locals and some disbursing warblers made for a pleasant
session. Weather: Cool, calm, mostly
overcast with sunny periods making it warm up and breezy when it clouded over
again. Present:JL, IW, RJC Nets:60Metres in five
rides of 18M, 18M , 12M, 18M, 18M up from 06:30 to 10:00hrs Lure (none): Capture (New/Recapture)

Sightings 38 Species:Some movement about
the site, mostly finches but also a few calling phylos warblers. A low flying
family of Swallows managed to avoid the nets again! Best bird obviously the
Redstart but also interesting was a Kestrel carrying what looked like a slow
worm over towards the bunkers
