04-05/07 Greenham Common & Woodspeen

Location: As Table Below
Session: 04-Jun-2017 and 05-Jun-2017
Headlines: We have made three low capture visits over the last two days.
Yesterday morning we ringed the Western Enclosure and captured eight. Not unexpected as unlike last week there was little movement around the scrub. We had near misses: a Dartford that got out before we could get to it and six Stonechats that went through the enclosure three times and manage to avoid the nets each time.
In the evening we visited the Sand Martin bank at Woodspeen. A couple of years ago to deter Badgers and particularly Stoat, wire was projected on a framework horizontally out from the top of the bank. This has made it impossible to place nets close enough to the bank. We now have to erect them across the water about four metres away. As a consequence capture depends on how low the martins make their approach. Last night we only captured two and a Sedge Warbler. We need to devise a more efficient capture method for next time.
Today (05/07) I put a net up in the scrub west of the Estover car park entrance. Recently on my walkabouts it has been good for sylvia warblers and the net picked up a couple of Garden Warblers from a family party of 5 or 6. It looks like the Lesser and Common Whitethroats there before the rains have moved off though.
Weather: warm, sunny, calm to light breeze for all sessions
