15/08 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 15-Aug-2017 06:20 to 10:20hrs
Headlines: As it rain over night I thought it might have grounded some migrants but the did not match this expectations. A Woodlark was a new species for GB and a little bit of an ID exercise. It was a young bird from a late brood. Unlike the last session here Chiffchaffs were on the move this time. The morning mostly was a lot of standing about unfortunately still we ringed a few more migrants. The nearest matching visit is for a similar number of captures but is dominated by Willow Warbler, bearing in mind last week’s capture was dominated by them it is another indicator that migration is earlier this year.
Weather: Cloudy with some sunny periods, calm early, breezy later.
Present: JL, IW, GB, EHM
Nets: 84metres in 5 rides of 18M, 18M, 12M, 18M, 18M(3shelf) up from 06:45 to 10:00hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler intermittently.

Recaptures: No recaptures
Woodlark juvenile, they always look scruffy close up
Sightings 34 Species: Ian's list. A few Robins out on the heath, the first detected for a while, maybe an influx from elsewhere. A Barn Owl flew east along the treeline at around 08:00hrs, a bit late for it to be out and about. The Green Sandpiper was spotted when it flew into our field of view while watching a gathering of Swallows milling about just above the treeline.
