20/08 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 20-Aug-2017 06:30 to 10:15 hrs
Headlines: A steady trickle of migrants kept us busy. Unusually no reaction when the audio was turned on. The next and following rounds each had a few captures. The only species carrying all but a residual of migration fat was Willow Warbler. Even the Sedge Warbler (we  capture one or two here each year) didn’t show any; probably indicates a stop-over due to running out of fuel. The capture was better than the nearest matching 2016 visit with a similar migrant makeup but in greater numbers. The two Linnets added to the number of this difficult to capture species; 15 so far this year, in 2016 we captured 6 and we had 3 in 2015. My impression is that this species didn’t have the breeding success in 2017 of previous years, this suggests the opposite applies. Yet another interesting session here. We left at the right time though. As I was driving back to the gate off the common, the main drag looked like Newbury main street on a Saturday including what appeared to be a dog walking club of about 30 people and many families out for a  walk.
Weather: Calm, warm, sunny periods, clouding over later
Present: JL, IW, DL, EMH
Nets: 84metres on five rides of 18M, 18M, 12M, 18M, 18M (3shelf) up from 07:00 to 10:00hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Firecrest, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat intermittently

Recaptures: No Recapture; migrants here rarely stay around

Sightings 29 Species: Without the attraction of the audio there is little sign of activity on the common. Many of the species on Ian’s list would not have been detected if they had not been captured. Unlike the last few visits, little sign of hirundine migration today.
