01/09 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 01-Sep-2017 06:30 to 11:20hrs
Headlines: We had a VIP visitor from Hungerford today, so we made maximum effort and a full set of nets was erected. It was very slow early, the first bird not being ringed until 07:45hrs. Yesterday it was mostly Chiffchaff captured, today Blackcaps made up not quite half the capture. Some were long winged males perhaps a sign of individuals from much further north. Many fewer Chiffchaffs today, with numbers matched by Willow Warblers. There was a flock of about 150 mixed Linnet and Goldfinch that flew in and around the enclosure but we only caught two (not sure whether to be disappointed or relieved). Late in the session a few Whitethroats arrived. Unfortunately we couldn’t conjure up any special birds for Reg, maybe next time.
Weather: Sunny periods, warm, mostly cam, occasional breeze
Present: JL, IW, RGS
Nets: 84metres in five rides of 18M, 18M, 12M, 18M, 18M (3shelf) up from 07:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat Wryneck (worth a try) Redstart intermittently

Recaptures: No recaptures

Sightings 33 Species: IW’s list and many more birds detected today plus some species I noted before he arrived. Yellow Wagtails were flying over calling and Ian spotted the Tree Pipit that flew over and disappeared in the trees. The mixed finch flock is getting bigger and bigger as groups from around the common combine. A  single Wheatear at our end of the common, understand there were more a few east of us.
