Session:
Headlines: The forecast was for
12 to 15mph winds just about the maximum speed for viable ringing. As the
clocks went back we
decided on a late start and to leave the 616 feeder until next week. Instead we put a few nets up in the
west scrub near the car park entrance to try for some of the many small
groups of Redwing flying about. IW put up two nets in the usual place east of
the entrance and I intended to put up nets in two recently created rides
west of the entrance that are usually quite sheltered from the wind. Unfortunately
the wind direction was north-ish and blustery. It affected the first net blowing
it onto thorn and bramble bushes twice as we put it up. Just as we managed to
stabilise this net there was a rain shower. Given the blustery conditions
coupled with the second net ride being bounded on one side by a barbed wire
fence we decided to abandoned putting the this net up. Unfortunately the
scrub is a little to high and many of the thrush flocks that took an interest
perched in the tops for a while before moving off. It got windier as the
session progressed and a visit to the west ride found that the net had once
again blown onto the thorn and bramble bushes. After removing it yet again from
the thorns and with several perforated fingertips we decided to take the net
down at about 09:15hrs. Towards the end of the session we captured the two
Goldcrests. There are usually good numbers of these in the scrub, probably
most bounced out of the billowing nets. We eventually captured nine birds
including four Redwings so not bad and all present have ringed Redwings this autumn some
more than one.
