Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure (wk24)
Notes. First
session migration monitoring at this
site. Quite a good capture for this early in the season. A couple of Goldcrest, an adult and a juvenile, also a juvenile
Dartford Warbler. There was a family party of the latter, two adults and four juveniles,
two went in the net but one got out before we got to it. A good selection of
species otherwise.
Juvenile Dartford Warbler
Adult Male Goldcrest
Present: JL,IW
Weather:
Sunny, bright, calm early light breeze later, hot.
Nets: 48metres 3 Rides,
18M, 18M and 12M up from 08:00 to 10:30
hrs
Lures:
BC-CC-GC-FC,
Misc Migrants, Hirundine intermittently.
Sightings: The Dartford Warblers adults were calling
frequently early, so it was no surprise when the family party appeared. A
pair of Stonechats were flycatching around the enclosure; the male was ringed. Several finch fledglings about. Swift and
Swallow seen in distance when checking out Kites, Buzzard and Gulls. Most birds
of prey including the Sparrowhawk were soaring high up for much of the morning. Surprising given the sunlight and warmth not many butterflies or dragonflies on the wing or humans on the common. A large dragonflies was seen too briefly to ID.
