25/06 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure wk26
Session: 25/06/2024 07:45 to 10:50hrs
Notes: Mostly juveniles today plus the adult Lesser Whitethroat and a male Willow Warbler in primary moult (flight feathers). Last year we ringed two Lesser Whitethroat (an adult and a juvenile) on the matching session. The Goldcrest was quite tiny – only recently fledged. Nice to ring a Treecreeper, I find these difficult to pick-up these days, hearing not what it was so probably miss the high pitched calls also don’t think they are a frequent encounter in recent times.
Present: JL,IW.
Weather: clear, sunny, calm, hot
Nets: 48metres 3 Rides, up from 08:00 to 10:30 hrs.

Lures audio: (Warblers), (Misc Migrants), (RT), (GH) intermittently.

Recaptures: (00)

Sightings: Apart from soaring Red Kite, Buzzard and two Cormorant flying over early there was little sign of any movement, with the exception of Jackdaw which had some double figure flocks out west from the bunkers; probably fledging juveniles. Two singing male Dartford Warbler is a first this part of the common this year. Several insect on the wing usually just one or two except for Small Heath. Insect activity has been relatively poor so far this year here.
