04/10 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure wk40
Session: 04/10/2024 07:45 to 11:30hrs
Notes:. It was pretty thick fog on the common until mid-session when it slowly cleared to that rarity this year bright Sun. The first net round produced four Blue Tits and a Great Tit. Then as the sun cleared birds began to move and we ringed a few Blackcaps, and Chiffchaff. Also, the first time for a while we ringed more than a single Goldcrest (4) and our fifth Firecrest of the season.
Present: JL,IW,NC.
Weather: Foggy early clearing to bright sun mis-session, calm cold to cool later.
Nets: 48metres 3 Rides, up from 08:00 to 10:30 hrs.

Lures audio: (Warbler), (Misc Migrants), (Thrushes), (YB) intermittently.

Recaptures: (00) None

Sightings: We didn’t pick up much movement over or about until the fog receded. There was an influx of Song Thrush coming mostly from the south. Every group we saw we expected to be Redwing but when we checked them out we could only find Song Thrush. The groups varied from singles to about 9 mostly heading north-ish. One or two reacted to the thrush audio circling a few times, one dropped into the enclosure scrub but flew off again unfortunately. It would have been good to ring one or two to see how the wing length compared with local birds. Jays were flying back and forth carrying acorns into the wood from Sandleford Heath way.
