20/03 Greenham Common Feeder

Headlines: Looks like the bulk of winter finches has moved on, particularly Siskin. Mostly we captured re-trap Lesser Redpoll though a small flock of Siskin did arrive mid-session in one capture. We seem to have ringed most of the finches visiting for now. A few, mostly adult, Great Tit, made up much of the rest of the capture; not many Blue Tit captured or seen.

Weather: Overcast sometimes bright, occasional gusty windy periods interspersed calm but always very chilly and more so as the session progressed.

Nets: 40 metres in rides of 12M, 10M, 12M and 6M up from 07:50 to 11:00hrs

Lure (feeders): Nygerx4, Black Sunflowerx2, Peanuts.

Capture (New/Recapture) 36 (8/28): Blue Tit 0/1, Chaffinch 1/0, Coal Tit 0/1, Goldfinch 1/0, Great Tit 4/4, Lesser Redpoll 1/15, Long-tailed Tit 0/1, Robin 1/0, Siskin 0/6

Recaptures: 28 all recent except Great Tit 1y 97d Lesser Redpoll 2y 11d, 119d Long-tailed Tit 1y 153d

Age Range: all 1st winter except adults Great Tit 5, Lesser Redpoll 2

Sightings 41 Species:  a good gathering of Redwing with a small flock of Fieldfare and Starling, think it is the first time I am aware of a Cetti’s Warbler being reported from the common, Golden Plover still around, a buzzard hovering like a Kestrel was interesting thought it was probably displaying to an unseen female.
