Location: Greenham
Common Western Enclosure
Session: 15-Jun-2016 06:30 to 10:30hrs
Headlines: A last minute
decision to try a session at the Western Enclosure noting that the ever
present rain showers of this summer were not due until late morning. The tail
end of the breeding season means no audio so expectations were low. It was
quiet with few signs of post fledging dispersal evident. As it turned out it
was better than hoped for with the first Woodlark ringed here since 2011. Not
much you can do with these as not a lot is known it seems of how the plumage
ages. She had a good brood patch so probably from a nearby territory. Woodlark
are almost always present when I ring the enclosure but are difficult to
capture so something of a bonus. Most of the other species captured were
foraging breeding birds. I have visited the enclosure several time in the last
week or so and have not been able to find any species breeding within the
enclosure; hence the early ringing session. There is a nice specimen Spotted
Orchid in the compound; the Bee Orchids are in the usual place but looking a bit trampled unfortunately.
Weather: sunny period, mostly
calm, becoming blustery towards the end of the session; rained as I left the
common.
