Session: 18-Aug-2016 07:15 to
10:45hrs
Headlines: It was raining quite
heavily at dawn but a quick check of the rain radar shown it was due to stop
around 06:30hrs and it did. I thought the rain may have brought some migrants
down. As it turned out it looks as if the rain front moved them on. It started
off quite promising when I captured three before I put the audio on. It
soon stopped though with six bird to 08:00hrs. No further captures for the next hour
and a half and I was thinking of finishing early when some Chiffchaff were
captured, also the first Blackcap of the morning. As mentioned yesterday this
year is not as bad as thought. From mid-July to mid-August: 2016-249, 2015-214,
2014-149 2013-155. What it does show is that Blackcap numbers are well down so far;
Chiffchaff numbers also but not as marked.
Weather: Calm, warm, humid, clearing
to bright sunshine, cloudier later and a light breeze as nets taken down.
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 48Metres in three
rides of 18M, 18M, 12M up from 07:30 to 10:30hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap,
Chiffchaff, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Willow Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Redstart
intermittently.
Capture (New/Recapture) 15 (15/0) : Blackbird
1/0, Blackcap 1/0, Chiffchaff 4/0, Goldcrest 1/0, Robin 1/0, Whitethroat 2/0,
Willow Warbler 4/0
Recaptures: none
Age Range: all 1st CY except
adult Chiffchaff 1
Sightings 34 Species: Some Jackdaw
about today unlike yesterday; maybe the extra pair of eyes helped. There was some
activity in the scrub mostly involving Whitethroat, Goldfinch, Greenfinch,
two Dartford Warblers and a group of Stonechat. A scan of the grassland to the
east produced the first autumn Wheatear for us at this site; later we found
three more. Also in the grassland was a flock of seven Woodlark; additional to
the two seen around the enclosure for the last week or so. The Swallows could
have been the same birds as yesterday.
