Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR Constant Effort Site 2021.03 of 12
Session: 23/05/2021, 06:00 to 11:00hrs
Notes: Much better ringing conditions for our third CES visit. We re-trapped the French ringed Sedge Warbler again now in breeding condition (a male). A Reed Warbler BTO ringed elsewhere, in breeding condition also re-trapped. As expected, Reed Warbler numbers increased despite the torrential rains of the last week or so. A very different session to the 2019 matching visit which was a poor session if the LOTTI’s troop is excluded. We had a visitor during the session, a guy on a bike insisted in going into additional nets site B to sit by the "lake" and have a "smoke" just at the end of a mist net so we had to take the net down unfortunately. Recently a shelter has also been erected in the same area including sail blinds and hand made hurdles as screens.
Present: JL,IW,JHW,DL
Weather: Sunny periods, calm early, overcast cold and breezy with light rain at the end of the session
Nets: 216metres in 2 rides of 198M, 18M up from 06:30 to 10:30hrs
Lures: None
Sightings 41 species: Lots of Swifts, with a few hirundines, feeding on a fly hatch during the session. Two or three Cuckoos working the reed bed. No Water Rail heard this week, possibly sitting on eggs.
