16/08 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure (wk33)
Session: 16/08/2023 07:45 to 11:00hrs
Which one is the Chiffchaff? The difference is clearer in the photos than it was in the hand
They are both juveniles
Notes: Not many birds on the move today, was hoping to get a species or two like we did week 33 last year (see the right hand table below). Had some confusing plumage colours on three Willow/Chiffs to keep us amused, needed to check to re-check their wing formulas to be sure which they were.
Present: JL,IW,KMB,IQ
Weather: bright sunny, warm, calm.
Nets:
48metres 3 Rides, 18M, 18M and 12M up from 08:00 to 10:30hrs
Lures: (BC-CC-WW-GW-WH-LW-GC-FC), (W-WC-SF-RZ-TP), GH, RT intermittently

Recaptures: (none)

Sightings: No Swifts seen today. Main interest was a mob of hirundine harassing first a Female Sparrowhawk along the treeline to the south, then another mob of hirundine chased a male across the heath into the trees to the north of the enclosure. IW spotted a young toad and we saw one of the few comma butterflies so far this year. Also, Mel who stopped to talk to us just before we finished, saw a Spotted Flycatcher on the common about 20 minutes after she left us, apparently not far from our net; maybe next time.
