26/01 Snelsmore Common

Location: Snelsmore Feeder CES2024/25.07
Session: 26/01/2025 07:45 to 10:10hrs.
Notes: Early morning weather forecasts were good but predicted heavy rain and 40+ mph winds from around 10:00 hrs (it was from 11:00hrs until this morning). We decided to try for as much of the session as possible until the rain arrived. The wind began increasing from around 09:30hrs and it got colder, we kept looking at the rain radar and seeing that heavy rain was imminent, we took the nets down at 10:00hrs. Few birds were coming to the feeder anyway, and we would probably have struggled to reach over 30 had we been able to do a normal three hour session. Some of us stayed chatting until about 10:45hrs and only about five birds were on the feeders when we left. The matching session for the 2023/24 winter has a much better total mainly due to the number of Blue Tit. Their numbers, particularly of first winter birds, have been lower than expected this winter. Upon review, it is evident that there have been similar and fewer Blue Tits during visit 7 in previous winters, specifically in 2019/20 (pre-covid), 2016/17, 2013/14, and 2012/13. This suggests that other factors, possibly early breeding territory activity, may be influencing the numbers for this visit.
