Session:
Headlines: I decided to put a
few nets up at the enclosure just to see what is about this time of year if anything. It was
very cold but not uncomfortably so; quite pleasant in the sun when you got use to it. A
Reed Bunting captured while I was putting the nets up meant no blank visit.
Immediately I turned on the Siskin Redpoll calls a flock of around 20 responded
so I quickly retreated to the Xtrail to process the Reed Bunting. When I returned I expected to see a least Redpoll or two in the nets but
unfortunately they had all avoided capture. As I expected there was little
activity in the enclosure for the rest of the morning. Four Goldcrests and a
Robin trickled into the nets over the next couple of hours. As three of the
crests were recaptures they are probably birds wintering in the gorse rather
than those on the move captured earlier this autumn. Late morning three
Goldfinch and a Greenfinch came to see what all the fuss was from the Redpoll
calls buzzed the nets a couple of times and flew off. As we were taking the
nets down a couple of Reed Buntings did the same. The life of a ringer is full
of if only!

Sightings 27 Species: Unexpectedly there was a quite a bit of activity mostly flying about. At least two maybe three Dartford Warblers were foraging around the enclosure all morning. The flock of Redpoll worked through the treetops to the south once flying out to chase off the Kestrel. A flock of nine Fieldfare flew north late on in the session and one or two Redwing fed in the trees with the finches. Could not find any Stonechat or Woodlark. I am pretty sure they disburse to the surrounding countryside particularly the latter, small gatherings of these can often be found near the coast on stubble (if there is any) December/January.
