03/05 Nest Box Checking

Yesterday and today I checked 129 nest boxes (IW help at Snelsmore)
Most birds are sitting, many probably on chicks or eggs about to hatch.
Snelsmore Common has the best occupation, Greenham Common the poorest, not sure why the latter is so low possibly there are more natural sites available in mature woodland habitat but then Snelsmore habitat is similar .
Both Greenham and Bagnor show significantly lower occupation compared to 2016
I think peak laying was about a week ahead of last year.
Let us hope that there is better coordination with the caterpillar hatch and any rain does not wash them off the trees.
The two Blue Tit failures are a predation and a bird sitting for at least a week with no eggs!
The Nuthatch failures are unusually desertions at egg stage.
So far no Great Tit desertions.
