09/05 NEST BOX CHECKING

Completed another round of nest box checking today:
Snelsmore Car park boxes checked 07/05 and the Winterbourne Holt boxes 08/05
Greenham Common boxes checked 08/05
Bagnor Estate boxes checked 09/05
Some birds still sitting probably due to the cold mornings, most likely on very young chicks.

The first Blue Tit broods ringed at Snelsmore and Bagnor. Two failures so far, desertions

One of the Great Tit failures I think was due to the cold on Monday morning, all the brood were dead and the female. They had not been long gone when I found them.

At Bagnor  77 Blue tits ringed this morning, interestingly no Great Tits ready here; most having recently hatched.

Got to the stage where I need to target particularly boxes rather than go round each site in turn as several nest were not quite ready to ring while others had one to two day old chicks.

On the way on to Greenham Common Sunday to check a box I thought I would miss if I left it any longer, I spotted the female Lapwing nesting on the 616 gravel was brooding a chick so I ringed it; the last of a brood of four. Unfortunately they have decided to locate just in front of one of the access gates, in an area just to the north of the red zone so I don't hold out much hope for the future of the remaining chick but you never know.
