14/06 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 14-May-2017 06:00 to 10:30hrs
Headlines: A clear and quiet day after the June stormy windy weather of the last week or so. Needed to clear some A rings left over from pulli ringing so was hoping to capture a few tits. A flock of about 20 Long-tailed Tits flew over while I was putting the nets up so I captured just the low flyers. Don’t think it was the same flock as the one on the 31-May. Following this it was the usual single capture with long periods between. A chat with some walkers about Cuckoo migration helped pass the time as it got hotter and hotter in the sun. It is interesting that even the passing interested general public are beginning to notice how few there are of some species this year. I didn’t do a full count as I spent from dawn (05:00ish) to around 09:30hrs yesterday, walking my usual route on the common, counting every individual bird seen or heard. Last year’s matching visit had a far more interesting capture.
Weather: Bright, sunny clear, hot, calm, slight breeze later.
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 66 metres in four rides of 18M, 18M, 12M, 18M up from 06:30 TO 10:00hrs
