Marsh LNR CEs visit 17.11
Session: 13-Aug-2017 05:30 hrs
to 11:00hrs
Headlines: Another poor session,
the reed bed was very quiet when we put the nets up. We had a guest with us for the session and it
would have been nice to have had a good capture but that’s ringing. A total of
26 is below the 37 average for CES visit 11; range: 2005-11, 1999-72. No Sedge
Warblers today but a couple more Reed Warbler than in 2016. Although phylos
warblers were calling in the scrub along the reed bed ride we unfortunately
didn’t capture any. In 2016 34 came from the standard nets so today’s 26 capture
is not that bad. It would have been nice to get a bit more variety though. We
cut back the collapsing sedge and cleaned out the rides after net down, not
the best time of day to be active in a hot humid reed bed. Just one more CES
session and we can start luring. Migration is in full swing now Willow
Warblers have been passing through this week at one of our migration sites. Oh and I nearly fell off the plank after telling our guest to be careful crossing over on it.
Weather: Cool earlier, warm
later, calm, sunny
Present: JL, IW, JHW, EMH, DL,
GB, SC
Nets: 198metres on one reed
bed standard net ride up from 06:10 to 10:10hrs; no additional nets.
Lure (none):

Recaptures: all recent except a
Reed Warbler 1y 362d probably a migrant from elsewhere as was ringed it
16-Aug-2015 and recaptured it last year in July.
Sightings 40 Species: Ian’s list of species detected
during the session. The Buzzard family was still very noisy, a lot of activity
first thing in the scrub: a mixed flock of tits including calling
Marsh Tit and other species, many hidden in the foliage so numbers probably an
underestimate. One or two Swifts flew over but no hirundine seen. The Raven had
a brown tone to its plumage and was probably one of the juveniles from the
pair that nested nearby.
1 comment:
I have a reedbed site and have been catching low numbers, mainly REEWA eg 13 total for CES 10. There are no Sedwa breeding but a couple of migrants caught. The reedbed is very quiet but I am hoping for a better catch in CES 11 and 12, maybe of migrants. My site is not so far from yours but with 168 metres of net and a six hour time period I am not convinced I have this right. I read all your blogs but am behind you in numbers so you can maybe see my disappointment.
