02/02 Bagnor Feeder

Location: Bagnor Feeder
Session: 02-Feb-2018 07:50 to 11:20hrs
Headlines: A steady capture day, one round at 09:15 consisted of nine 1st winter Blue Tits followed by a pause around 09:30hrs then up to three birds per round until nets down when eight birds captured. Although other species were seen around the feeder, including a small flock of Siskin, the capture consisted of Blue and Great Tits and one Great Spotted Woodpecker. Looking at the last 10 winter periods this winter’s visit 7 looks to be quite a reasonable one particularly as the last two had single figure captures. There were  good numbers of Blue Tits from last year’s breeding season. The majority of the nest box pulli are regulars at this feeder and include some fledged from Winterbourne Holt boxes at the north end of Snelsmore Common.
Weather: wind gusting at times, sunny periods, a slight ground frost early.
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 12metres, a 6M net each side of feeders up from 08:00 to 11;00hrs
Lure (feeders): peanuts, black sunflower, fat-balls, niger

Sightings 30 Species: a flock of Siskin dropped in near the feeders to drink; one was on the niger feeder on the 1st Feb so I was hopeful that we might ring one today but no luck on that front, even the Goldfinch stayed in the tree tops. Skylarks have appeared here in the last few days, having apparently vacated the site last Autumn. About 100 woodpigeons were flushed from the nearby kale field, couldn't find what put them up. The usual flocks of gulls streamed west, probably started before dawn and we saw the tail-enders
