05/07 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 05-Jul-2018 06:30 to 10;20hrs
Headlines: First session I could get out this week and first using audio lure. The target is migrant sylvia and phyloscopus warblers but all scarce species welcome! Another family of Stonechats has fledged in the last day or so, they were very active around the enclosure and we managed to capture a juvenile male. We had a trickle of birds through the morning. Most of the sylvia warblers were capture early and the phylos and tits came later. As with recent sessions here the tits were captured one or two a round and don’t seem to be forming into flocks yet. The majority were birds that fledge this year; the adults captured were in final stage breeding condition, at least one adult male Blackcap had finished. Some warblers showed small traces of (migration) fat; up to B2. There was a matching visit from 2017 but it is not a fair comparison because audio lures were not used.
Weather: bright, sunny, light breeze to calm
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 48metres in three rides of 18M, 18M, 12M up from 06:45 to 10:00hrs
Lure (audio): BLACA, CHIFF, GOLDC, FIREC, WILWA, GARWA, REDST intermittently

Todays juvenile male Stonechat
Sightings 36 Species: Ian’s list with a couple of species I picked up before he arrived. As for the last visit Little Egret (two together this time) flying south south west. We did pick up a Woodlark, these are a bit illusive at the moment. Most of the warblers were captures very few seen or heard. A Mistle Thrush over was a first sighting of this species here for a while. Still a few Linnets about and Greenfinch are noisy everywhere I go, not just at this site.
