30/07 Thatcham Marsh LNR CES visit 2018.09

Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR CES visit 2018.09
Session: 30-Jul-2018 05:30 to 10:30hrs
Headlines: We were due to ring yesterday, it began raining before we left home but annoyingly not until after we had got ready to leave. Today’s weather was quite good, better than expected. Interestingly and unusually four of the five Blackcaps captured were adults and all in primary moult; usually at this time of year we capture juveniles and occasionally an adult. Some of the adult Reed Warblers captured were still in breeding condition. Captures for visit 09 in the standard nets  are below the average of 44 for the 26 years of CES; range 1995-85, 2013-24. The additional net in the scrub drew a blank. On the last visit 08 two weeks ago about a third of the capture was from the additional nets. The Chiffchaff ringed at Greenham Common last week was of interest to me though it is not the first from there that has turned up here a few days later. The only Cetti’s Warbler seen or heard was the one captured. This is a little concerning as we have in the past done well for this species in the tail-end visits of the CES. A lone Sedge Warbler, the same as last year’s visit 09, is I suppose not unexpected given the low numbers of recent years. The reed bed was very quiet this visit, this statement is becoming all too familiar.
Weather: mostly overcast, cool, sometimes breezy, few spots of rain
Present: JL, IW, JHW, DL, GB, RGS, RDW, Mrs RDW
Nets: 210metres in two rides 198m of standard nets and 12m additional net up from 06:05 to 10:05hrs

Recaptures: (08) all recent and local except:
BLUTI             ringed 05-Oct-2014
CHIFF            ringed Greenham Common 22-Jul-2018
REEWA         ringed 23-Jul-2017

Sightings 42 Species: Ian's list: notable was the steady movement of swifts drifting south on their way back to winter quarters, a Green sandpiper over was the first here for a while, what sounded like a calling wader flying about could not be located and remained un-recognised; might have been something good as none of us knew the call, not much activity in the scrub or reed bed.
