Session:
Headlines: The overcast sky looked
quite threatening but apart from a few spots of rain occasionally it stayed
fine; we were on the edge of a rain front to the east. Blue sky showed to the
west. As I finish putting up the second net the chattering of swallows over
towards the bunkers grew louder and some 20 birds swirled low overhead. I quickly put on their song lure, they came in low, and jinked over the nets and away. Fortunately for me the lowest
one swerved but was unable to avoid the net I had just put up. Another fly pass
while I put up the third net failed to capture anymore, they all managed to
avoid the nets and flew off to feed over the trees. A relatively low capture
today of mostly Willow Warbler. The 10th of August last year was
the first opportunity for me to ring after a holiday and as can be seen the
capture was a little different. Where are this years Blackcaps? All three visits this week have had low numbers of Sylvia warblers. About
100metres to the east of the enclosure we saw some Whitethroats and a single
Garden Warbler, but no Blackcap appeared to be present in the area. Overcast
conditions like todays usually bring migrant birds in, so the total is a
little disappointing; nice to ring a Swallow though.
Weather: overcast, light
breeze, cool, occasional spotting
