17/08 Greenham Common

Location: 17/08 Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 17-Aug-2018 06:50 to 10:35hrs
Headlines: Rained off yesterday and so did third visit today. We had quality rather than quantity including Lesser Whitethroat, Swallow and Tree Pipit. We saw three of the latter dropped into the enclosure from high up; visible migration? The Swallows took more of an interest in the audio today, one perching on a pole, another on the top shelf string and the rest settled on the top fence wire for much of the morning, occasionally making low flying runs around the nets; finally, one slipped up. I heard Long-tailed Tits somewhere over by the bunkers when putting the nets up but unlike last year’s matching visit they did not come our way. I substituted the Wood Warbler for a Tree Pipit audio to try and capture the other two birds, but they stayed in the nearby scrub feeding.  The first Blackcaps of the week today; preliminary analysis suggests this species departed early this year. We should get birds moving through from now into the Autumn.  For the first time this season no Garden Warblers captured or located, apart from the possibility of a few stragglers if any that is probably it until next year.
Weather: Sunny, cool, calm early, breezy later.
Present: JL. IW
Nets: 48metres in three rides of 18m, 18m ,12m up from 07:15 to 10:15hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Willow Warbler, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Swallow, Wood Warbler(part), Tree Pipit(part) intermittently.
