29/08 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 29-Aug-2018 07:00 to 10:45hrs
Headlines: It was raining at dawn, stopping soon after. Rain through the night can force night migrants to stopover. So, I was quite hopeful that we might do well and thought it to be an OK total. That is until I looked at how we did last year on the 29-Aug! Against the expected trend we only captured two Chiffchaffs today and they did not arrive until the last 45 minutes of the session. Blackcap numbers matched last year and Willow Warbler a little better. Long-tailed Tits that accounted for over a quarter of last year’s total are very scarce on the common this year; they seem to have suffered during the hot spell. We called down three more Tree Pipits today and manage to jink one into the net. Still waiting for this years Redstart or two, time is running out though.
Weather: Overcast early, calm, warm, sunny periods, breezy, warm later.
Present: JL, IW
Nets: 48metres in three rides of 18m, 18m, 12m up from 07:30 to 10:30hrs
Lure (audio): Playlists: Warblers, Miscellaneous Migrants intermittently

Recaptures: none

Sightings 31 Species: Three singleton Yellow Wagtails over during the early morning unfortunately did not react to calls. Although they are found in the nearby residential areas, Collared Doves are scarce visitors to the common.
