06/11 Greenham Common Western Enclosure

Week 45 is usually the last week there is any prospect of serious numbers being captured at the Western Enclosure. This year most summer migrants seem to have left early and incomers are so far only arriving in smallish numbers. Despite a poor weather forecast we gave it ago as the rest of the week is looking  to be wet and windy. It was quite breezy when I arrived and put up the basic 48 metres of nets in three rides and broke the silence of the common with my audio lures. Redwings and a Fieldfare or two came down in response but didn't go in. It is a bit of a puzzle as I believe I am using the same lures as last year when I ringed double figures of Redwing. Elsewhere, a little further to the west, where I believe they are using the same Latvian audio, they seem to be having more success. The total for the morning was five Goldcrest and a Meadow Pipit; the latter another species that has yet to arrive in any numbers at the western end.. One of the Goldcrest first ringed on the 23-Oct-2018 seems to be resident in the scrub as this is the third time I have retrapped it since. We took the nets down at 11:00hrs after they had been up for about 2.5 hours. There is no matching visit from last year.
Sightings 32 Species: The best species, a Great Black-backed Gull over northeast and we manage to see the Dartford Warbler that has called once or twice on recent visits. There was little movement around the heath. The few winter thrushes seen were early in the session. The was one reasonably sized Woodpigeon flock. The Golden Plover flock appeared to be being disturbed off the fire plane gravel area. Just as we were leaving the Jackdaws, that had been flying about, gathered into one c50 flock.  (JL with IW)
