Session:
Notes: The weather has been
difficult so far this month and the
forecast is for unsettled, so decided to ring today as it looked to be one of
the better days for this half of the month. It was very slow to start with
four birds for each of the first two rounds. This included LOTTI’s and a
couple of BLUTIs. At 09:20 it began to pick up, the next round of eight
included three SISKIs and more BLUTIs. More BLUTIs followed with a couple more
SISKI. Although GRETIs were singing in the hedge and scrub the first and only
capture of this species was in the penultimate round when a new pair was ringed; an adult and a toy-boy. An
at least six year old GRSWO was the oldest bird today and some more
pulli from nearby Mount Hill and one from Winterbourne Holt woods on
Snelsmore Common. Last winter’s matching visit illustrates the better survival of 1st
calendar birds this year; more GRETIs last year though!

Sightings 31 Species: Two new species for
the year at this site: Water Rail and Skylark. Corvids and others may be less
visible than usual as the surrounding fields have loud crow scarers firing at regular
intervals. The small flock of Siskin absent for the last couple of weeks has
returned, otherwise much as expected although the flock of Greylag Geese
flying west is unusual for here. Still a lot of game birds about. at the end of the season. Gulls are scarce this winter due the
the pig farm near Boxford going out of business last year.
