10/09 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 10-Sep-2020, 07:30 to 11:30hrs

Notes: A few more Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs and a couple of latish Whitethroats made up the bulk of today’s capture. Finally, we captured one of the several Green Woodpeckers that until now have flown round, over  or bounced out of the nets through the season. Last years matching visit indicates the contrast between this and last year and it is the lack of resident birds as well as migrants. We have not detected any Long-tailed Tits since 28th July, for instance, anywhere on the Common despite several visits a week
Present:  JL,IW,JC
Weather: Bright Sunshine, warm, calm
Nets: 48metres in 3 net rides, two 18M and one 12M net up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (Audio):
Warblers, Misc Migrants, Redstart, Hirundine, Autumn intermittent.

A rather tatty immature Green Woodpecker, apparently they begin a primary wing feather moult while still in the nest; seems a strange strategy to begin to replace flight feathers before your first flight

Recaptures: (0)
Sightings 32 Species: Marsh Tit calling over towards Sandleford Copse, two Rooks over are the first for some time and a good gathering of Meadow Pipits
