11/09 Greenham Common

 Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 11-Sep-2020, 07:30 to 11:30hrs

Notes: The conditions were ideal this morning, overcast and calm and we were hoping for a good session. The birds didn’t cooperate though with little activity on the migrant or resident front. The only interest being the re-trap Stonechat, and Chiffchaff. The first bird of the session was a scruffy moulting adult Jay. It escaped from the net into the bushes as I approach but then doubled back into the net. I didn’t attempt to photograph it as they have a very sharp tip on their top mandible and are extremely aggressive; managed to escape injury this time.
Present:  JL,IW
Weather: Overcast, cool, calm for much of the session breezy near the end as the wind moved from a northerly to a westerly direction.
Nets: 48metres in 3 net rides, two 18M and one 12M net up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (Audio):
Warblers, Misc Migrants, Redstart, Dartford Warbler, Hirundine, Autumn intermittently.

Re-trap immature male Stonechat

Recaptures: (2)  Chiffchaff ringed 07/07/2020, Stonechat ringed 07/07/2020
Sightings 32 Species:
A Hobby flew west low along the treetops. It has been a good season here for migrant Hobby this year. Ian flushed the Redstart into a hawthorn bush on a walk round. It did a vanishing trick and we couldn’t find it again.  Swallows continued through west in small groups
