02/09 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure Week 35
Session: 02/09/2021, 07:20 to 11:30hrs
Notes: It didn’t look promising this morning as the weather reverted to the dark and blustery that has become the norm for some weeks now. Some interesting birds though. It started with just one bird at nets up, an out of habitat Reed Warbler. Then nothing until 09:00hrs when we captured 18 in one net round. This included one of my hoped-for species, an immature male Redstart. Just one bird from the next round and finally four more including a feisty Magpie that took a few painful pecks at my hand, drew blood once. We had been joined by my great grandson Charlie who insisted Kay sent photos to his mum and dad of me struggling to control the bird.
Immature male Redstart
(not obvious in this photo but the under-colour of the ear coverts, bib etc is black and the feathers above the beak signs of white)
