23/09 Greenham Common

Location: Greenham Common - Western Enclosure wk 2025-39
Session: 23/09/2025 07:40 to 11:10hrs
Present: JL,IW,KMB.
Weather: bright sunny clear, warm, light breeze.
Nets: 48metres 3 Rides, up from 08:00 to 10:30hrs.
Lures audio: (BC-CC-FC-GC-GW-WH-LW-WO),(YW-WC-W.-TP-RT-RZ),(YB),(RT) intermittently.
Notes: Good to get back to normal after a holiday break. KMB joined us – accessing for her C permit which as far as I’m concerned she is more than ready for. Mostly Blackcap and Chiffchaff still, their passage usually peaks week 37/38 here so we have probably missed their migration high point. Goldcrests peak migration usually starts week 40 (next week) and continues until week 44 after which it steeply drops away. Somebody claimed a Yellow-browed Warbler yesterday at the other end of the common so we hoped there might be one about today but no luck; the last couple of weeks of September into October is when we have ringed them here in the past.
Blue Tit           ringed: 12/08/2025

Sightings: Swallows over South, some flying west-ish along the tree line to the north. A Woodlark was singing for a while, the first here since around the end of May. A few Chaffinch flying over, must be arriving from elsewhere because there are no resident birds at this end of the common that I’ve detected since early Spring. Expected more Jay activity as they are usually collecting acorns this time of year, flying back and forth across the heath.
