Notes: A really pleasant
late autumn morning; when is it going to get really cold? The only capture after
nets erection was a Wren and there appeared to be little activity save for
over-flying winter finches and thrushes. The next round 30 minutes later was
of seven including the first Lesser Redpoll of the autumn here and three
Goldcrest. The next round produced four birds: an adult Robin, a Chiffchaff,
another Goldcrest and the bird of the day a Firecrest, the fourth here this autumn.
Unfortunately our next visit disturbed three Lesser Redpolls from near the
nets. In the nets were: three Goldcrests and two Long-tailed Tits. After this it
went quiet with just a chiffchaff half an hour later. At 11:00 hrs we decided
to take the nets down after extracting a second Great Tit, another Goldcrest
and two Chiffchaffs. There are good numbers crest moving around the common at
this time of year and a few Chiffchaff still going through; individuals of
both species included quite long winged birds. It would be interesting to know
how far they have come and how far they will go. The Chiffchaffs could be
wintering birds from north Europe on their way to the West Country to winter
(Slapton Ley) or maybe just to one of the local sewage treatment works.
Sightings 33 Species: A steady
flow of thrushes, Redwing, Fieldfare and Blackbirds west and west-north-west
for much of the morning. We nearly missed the Woodlarks as Skylarks were also
flying about, well spotted Mr Weston. We never seem to pickup Firecrest in the
field they just appear in the net. No sign of Stonechat or Dartford Warbler
today.
