Session: 27-Oct-2015 07:30 to
10:45 hrs
Weather: Overcast, calm until I
put up my nets when it began gusting
Present: JL, RGS, IW
Nets: 160’ in three rides
of 60’, 60’, and 40’ up from 07:45 to 10:30 hours
Lure audio): Blackcap,
Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Firecrest, Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, and Latvian Redwing; intermittently
Capture New/Recapture). 1 : A
Coal Tit
Recaptures: None
Age Range: a 1st winter
Notes: It looked good from
my bedroom window and was calm on arrival but as I put the nets up it began to
blow. I stayed because I had put the nets up but knew it was too windy to
catch much. Redwings reacted to song, briefly perching in the tops of the
bushes before flying off. Mid-way through a Coal Tit flew out of the wood into
a birch bush before flying in the direction of the compound but was not in the
net the next round; it was there the next time we checked though. This was
ringed and release and I was about to suggest we take the nets down when Reg noticed that my front near side tyre was flat. On
closer inspection a large finger size flint had punctured the tyre; I checked
the pressures yesterday to try and avoid such an occurrence. The next half
hour was spent unloading the car and changing the wheel which proved quite
stubborn but Ian’s extra “strength” managed to release the nuts. Took the nets down after watching more Redwings land and fly off; ever get the feeling you should have stayed in bed!
Sightings 29 Species: Some of the
usual suspects missing. Nothing unexpected though except perhaps the Raven that flew
along the trees and disappeared over the bunkers.
