Session: 24-Jul-2016 05:45 to
10:40hrs
Headlines: Another poor session with
probably a few straggler Acrocephalus, augmented by migrants. If there is a
good passage through our site as is often the case in August, it will be
obvious this year. 24 from the standard nets is well below the average of 46
for visit 09; range 2013-24 1998-87. A cumulative total of 273 to visit 09;
the average for this visit is 365. Reed Warbler juveniles captured to date
total 21; last year it was 96 for the 12 visits. Sedge warbler juvenile totals
to date 16, last year it was 26 for 12 visits.
Weather: Overcast, warm calm.

Age Range: all juveniles except adults:
Blackcap 2, Blue Tit 1, Reed Bunting 1, Reed Warbler 6, Robin 1, Sedge Warbler
2, Wren 4/1
Sightings 40 Species: Another
quiet morning with little visible movement. A few Blue Tit calling from the
reed bed; only one adult captured though. The usual squabbling Water Rails
heard; probably three breeding pairs in our part of the bed this year. At
least one pair of Reed Warbler still active, the other adults probably
migrants and the Sedge Warblers are moving through or from the
surrounding area. A big female Sparrowhawk flew over with prey and the buzzard
nest over the back is getting very noisy. Three swifts over could be the last
of the year, most have vacated the Newbury area by the first week of August.
