31/07 Greenham Common Western Enclosure

Location: Greenham Common Western Enclosure
Session: 31-Jul-2016 06:00 to 10:30hrs
Headlines: Some movement today. Best bird the Grasshopper Warbler that turned up in the nets before the audio of its song was played. Swallows were flitting through and around for most of the morning and the usual six House Martins flew around the nets a few times giving hope of a capture but no such luck. As usual relatively quiet, Swallows, Goldfinches responded to audio but just one of the latter captured. Two Dartford Warblers flew around the end of a net as I was taking it down. First time for a while that we have ringed on the common on a Sunday; not as many people around as expected.
Weather: sunny periods mostly warm, sometimes breezy.
Present: JL, IW, JHW
Nets: 84M in five rides of 18M, 18M, 12M 18M, 18M up from 06:30 until 10:00hrs
Lure (audio ): Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Firecrest, Goldcrest, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Linnet, Grasshopper Warbler, Stonechat, Goldfinch, Swallow intermittently.

Recaptures: None
Age Range: all juveniles except adults: Blue Tit 1, Willow Warbler 5
Juvenile Grasshopper Warbler first one captured by me on the common.
Last one captured by NRG July 2013 at Thatcham Marsh LNR
Sightings 36 Species: Surprising no raptors seen except far away to the south. Searching the sky towards Newbury produces at least five Swifts. Six Spot Burnet Moths were on the wing with Small White, Common Blue, Gatekeeper and Grayling Butterflies. Ian ID a rare-ish chalk loving plant from a photo by a passing dog walker; she was most impressed but I have forgotten the name of the plant. A Roe Buck pursued a Doe around the heath for most of the morning.
