Session: 05-Aug-2016 06:30 to
10:10hrs
Headlines: The morning started
slowly with no captures after putting the nets up. The audio produced Garden
Warbler, Blackcap and Willow Warbler on the second round of the day. This was followed
by a round that included the Blue Tit, a Reed Warbler (the fourth here this
season), Robin, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler and the first Whitethroats. It
became apparent when extracting for this round that there was much activity in
the surrounding bushes particularly to the south of the enclosure. The most
obvious species was Whitethroat with other sylvia warblers. One of the Ipods
was turned over to playing Whitethroat and another to Lesser Whitethroat. The
next round consisted of mostly Whitethroat but also included a Meadow Pipit.
As we approached one net two larger birds were captured at the far end of the
net. As we got closer one pulled away from the net and released itself and as
a consequence we ended up with one Woodlark instead of two. We were convinced
it was a juvenile but wavered a bit when we notice it was in primary moult; a
quick check of Svensson confirmed that both adults and juveniles have a complete
moults at this time of the year. No Lesser Whitethroats materialised and the
Dartford Warblers and Stonechats evaded the nets yet again as did some low
flying hirundine. The was still plenty of activity in the surrounding bushes as we took the nets down but had to go somewhere so left promptly, otherwise would have stayed longer.
Weather: bright, sunny cool
early warming up later, calm with an occasional light breeze
Present: JL, IW, RJC
Nets: 48M in three rides of
18M, 18M, 12M up from 06:35 to 10:00hrs
Lure (audio): Blackcap, Chiffchaff,
Firecrest, Goldcrest, Willow Warbler, Linnet, Redstart, Dartford Warbler, Whitethroat,
Lesser Whitethroat intermittently.
Capture (New/Recapture) 32 (29/3) : Blackcap
2/0, Blue Tit 0/1, Chiffchaff 3/0, Garden Warbler 5/0, Goldfinch 1/0, Meadow
pipit 1/0, Reed Warbler 1/0, Robin 1/0, Whitethroat 7/1, Willow Warbler 7/0,
Woodlark 1/0.
Recaptures: 3, all recent, the
Blue Tit was a female trapped in nest box PK32 on the 2nd June and the
Whitethroat had been ringed on the last visit, while the Robin had been ringed
here as a speckled juvenile 45 days ago and was now in full adult plumage.
Age Range: all 1st CY (calendar
year) except the adult Blue Tit
This Red Admiral soaked up the early morning sun for well over 30 minutes before flying off
Today's Woodlark a bit tidier than the full grown captured earlier this summer.
Sightings 36 Species: Early it was
quiet but quite soon there was a lot of activity in the bushes, mostly
Whitethroat and fewer Garden Warblers. As I was putting up the nets something
called that made me think for a minute before realising it to be a Yellow
Wagtail. There seems to have been a change in the resident Stonechats as none
of those seen appeared to be ringed. A Kestrel flying just above the tree line
also produced the Swift seen in the background; may have been more but they
quickly disappeared. The overflying Sand Martin is a scarce species for this
site. There is still a large flock of Goldfinch mostly near the cattle
feeders. Linnet numbers are reduced most are ground feeding on the grass seed
heads. The best bird of the day the Spotted Flycatcher spotted in the nearby
birch trees by IW. Later it flew high over the enclosure south.
