Headlines: I got caught out by
the weather yesterday (25/08), the forecast was for rain early and it was
raining at 05:00hrs but it must have stopped soon after and the rest of the
morning was calm. I went back to sleep however not waking until 07:00 and only
realise the good ringing conditions when I did a walk around Crookham Pools at
08:30; me and about three hundred dog walkers, probably a massive exaggeration
but you get my drift. Today (26/08) the conditions at dawn were also quite
good and a steady flow of migrants through during the morning made for a
pleasant session. Blackcaps and Chiffchaff have replace Whitethroat, Willow
and Garden Warbler number-wise. Nothing scarce captured. We did have a close
look at the Garden Warbler, it was a noticeably small bird with a 72mm wing; normally
they are a fairly constant 78mm at this site. Unfortunately we could not make
it into anything else. The “anything else” it could have been would be a real
rarity; maybe next time.
Weather: overcast
clearing to bright sunshine as the sun came up above the trees, slight breeze;
fresh at first warm later.
