Session:
Headlines: The weather was dull
and dank when I looked out the window just after dawn but I thought it might
be worth a short visit. When I arrived at the site there was a little more
breeze that expected. A few phylos were calling from the scrub and I put up
the “basic” three nets with low expectations. A Blackcap and a re-trap
Chiffchaff were in the first net when I finished putting up the nets and these
were quickly processed. Ian then noticed a bird in the nearest net
and went to get it but quickly returned as there was also a Spotted Flycatcher
in the bushes by the net. We left it a few minutes until one of the net poles
shuddered and we thought maybe something big like a Woodpigeon had hit the
net. We went to investigate and the wind has caused one of the telescopic
poles to retract so no big bird. However the Spotted Flycatcher was
one of three birds captured. We don’t capture many of these now so a nice
capture made the session worthwhile. The previous capture was of a September
Thatcham LNR bird in 2015 and before that in 2011; looking back
one or two a year seems to be the norm since the mid-1970s. Just the odd bird or two a round followed and all the time the wind was gaining strength and this
with the odd spot of rain instigated an early finish.
