06/11 Greenham Common Estovers Feeder (616)

Location: Greenham Common Estovers Feeder (616)
Session: 06-Nov-2016 07:30 to 11:15hrs
Headlines: Felt pretty cold today and a disappointing capture, something we may have to get use to given the low number of Blue and Great Tits around so far this year. The Great Spotted Woodpecker had been ringed here 15-Dec-2013 and recaptured Mar and Nov 2014. The finches were as usual much more wary and spent some of the time in the tops of trees before flying off; they returned several times and then flew off again; did manage to capture two eventually. The Goldcrest was caught in a net in the gorse scrub.
Weather: Sunny, cold, blustery
Present: JL, JHW, IW, GB, SC
Nets: 36metres in three rides 12M, 12M feeder nets 12M scrub, nets up from 07:50 to 11:00hrs
Lure (feeders): Niger, Black Sunflower, Peanuts, Black Sunflower

A very disappointing 1st session for comparison on the right is last winters 1st session of the 01-Nov-2015.
Recaptures: (2) Great Spotted Woodpecker 2y 327d, Great Tit 212d

Sightings 30 Species: I found the cold pretty unpleasant today, so recording not up to scratch. A Kingfisher spotted just before it disappeared behind the trees on the far side of Bury's Bank Road was unusual but not unknown,.The only other movement of note, a trickle of Lesser Black-back Gulls heading in the direction Lower Farm GP.
