27/12 Snelsmore Common Feeder

Location: Snelsmore Common Feeder
Session: 27-Dec-2018 07:45 to 11:30hrs
Notes: for most of the session it was just DL and me while IW did his BTO winter bird survey, so we were constantly processing or extracting. The first round was of six birds, the next of 17, followed by 28 then 31 and the final round was of 21. We had some good recoveries including two Blue Tits ringed in nest boxes in 2017 also two ringed full-grown birds from 2015. A Coal Tit from 2017 and also a Great Tit. All the pulli of the latter were from the 2018 breeding season. We were glad to see IW towards the  end of the session to help us finish. I know one of my trainees has decided to lapse but where were the other two? By the way congratulations to VG who is now an (independent) A ringer. A good session compared to last winter’s matching visit. It reinforces the perception that 2018 had a better breeding season and post-fledging survival than 2017.
Weather: a cold fog appeared and disappeared for most of the morning with periods of sun through the murk, cold, calm
Present: JL, DL, IW-(part)
Nets: 12metres, a 6m ride each side of feeder up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs.
Lure (feeder): black sunflower, niger, fat balls, peanuts
