03/01 Bagnor Feeder

Location: Bagnor Feeder
Session: 03-Jan-2019 07:45 to 11:30hrs
Notes: The first ringing session for me of the year. IW not available but this feeder has been quiet for the last few weeks so did not expect to get a big capture. Each round produced a manageable number of birds. The numbers arriving tailed off until the last round when 12 were in the nets. Some good pulli captures including a 2017 ringed pulli and one from 2018 ringed in Snelsmore Common box CP26. Only one Great Spotted Woodpecker this session unlike the five of the last session here.. A new Nuthatch as well as a recaptured is a little unusual as by this time in the season this species becomes wary of the nets. Another Siskin, this time a female and a female Chaffinch that did not have grotty foot could be ringed. Comparison with last year’s matching visit shows those species captured in both sessions are better for Blue Tit and poor for Great Tit. Other species numbers are too few to compare; today’s session had more species variety. Apart from the weather which was a little uncomfortable to be out in an enjoyable session.
Weather: Dull, dank, overcast, not quite freezing, cold, calm
Present: JL
Nets: 12metres one 6m ride each side of feeder up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
Lure (feeder): black sunflower, peanuts, niger, fat balls

Sightings 30 Species: The highlight for me was the Barn Owl quartering the field and Lynchets when I arrived. Not seen one of these for a year or two; no surprise as I haven’t really looked for them. Probably missed one or two species including something over, calling loudly that I couldn’t see as I was first extracting then ringing when it called from behind the tree cover. The call was familiar, a bit gull like, but I can think what it was! a pubic corvid is the nearest that comes to mind.
