23/01 Greenham Estovers Feeder

Location: Greenham Estovers Feeder
Session: 24-Jan-2019 07:45 to 11:15hrs
Notes: Not much coming to this feeder since the turn of the year; I think most visit later in the day. When topping up the feeders the later in the morning I get there the more activity; might have to try a mid-day session sometime. In comparison to last year’s matching visit todays’ capture is quite good though. No sign of any winter finches yet. In previous years from mid-January on they usually begin to attend this feeder in ever increasing numbers into April. The only sign of them this year so far has been a very bright male Lesser Redpoll seen when topping up the Snelsmore Feeder last week. I have not found any flocks of this species since the Autumn passage. The few Siskins that have frequented Bagnor since October seem to have moved on as I have not detected them this week on my two visits there. I note that both species are turning up at feeders to the east and west of West Berkshire. Even the local Goldfinch flocks are fewer in number compared to a year or so ago. The pulli Blue Tit ringed in Bowdown nest box 10 had a deformed lower mandible, not noted in a previous recapture It was good to recapture one of the pulli ringed in nest box PK23 from south of the heathland.
Weather: Cold, overcast, calm

Nets: 34metres around feeders in three rides of 10m, 12m, 12m up from 08:00 to 11:00hrs
