14/07 Thatcham Marsh LNR

Location: Thatcham Marsh LNR CES 2019.08
Session: 14-Jul-2019 06:00 to 10:50 hrs
Notes: Another good session. 45 from the standard net ride is a little above the average for CES visit 08 of 43; range 2016 23, 1997 85 and the cumulative total of 306 is below the 359 average to visit 08. The highlight would be the Carrion Crow juvenile a first for us on the CES, not that we have ringed many since Newbury Ringing Group was setup in 1967. Otherwise we had the first juvenile Cetti’s Warbler of the season and the good run of Chiffchaff continues. We are one below the best ever total in 1995 of 45 and we still have four visits to go.
Weather: Overcast, warm, calm
Present: JL, JHW, DL IW, RGS, RDW
Nets: 218metres in three rides: 198m standard reed bed ride and 18m and 10m scrub rides up from 06:30 to 10:30hrs
Lure ( ): none

Recaptures: (11) all recent except:
ROBIN           ringed 08/07/2018
REEWA         ringed 24/07/2016

Todays unusual capture, a juvenile Carrion Crow (JHW)
Sightings 40 Species: A large wader flew over but was gone before we could get good views. It called a few times, but we could not agree the id; I thought it sounded like Oystercatcher, others thought Greenshank. Water Rails were calling again today so perhaps they did breed in the remaining reed.
