Notes: The weather for the past few weeks has not been conducive for ringing.
We last tried on the 26th Oct. We put the nets up and ringed a Goldcrest, by
which time it was raining hard, so we took the nets down, all in about half an
hour, and got a soaking. The next time the weather was anywhere near suitable
was Monday 31st Oct, but family business intervened. Yesterday it was heavy rain for
most of the morning and anyway the feeders needed a top-up, so today was the
first opportunity. We didn’t do too bad given the blustery strong wind;
probably some of the few birds crossing the heath bounced out of the nets. We
did see Fieldfare, Redwing and a couple of unidentified finches lured into the enclosure;
none in the nets when we checked though. We are due to start the winter CES’s
at the feeders this weekend, but it seems unlikely that we will as heavy rain
is forecast yet again. The stream of blustery wet weather coming off the western
approaches seems set for the foreseeable future, well into next week and
beyond. As can be seen from last years matching visit there should still be interesting
species out there to ring, so might give them a chance Friday.
