Session: 23-Oct-2016 07:30 to
11:30hrs
Headlines: A busy morning with a
first capture of 32; many Long-tailed Tits. More captures resulted in 38 of this species in
total being captured; thought to be from at least two different flocks. For the last year or two numbers captured of this species have been dropping so a good capture as this is, is welcome; probably an equal number avoided capture. Still
a few Chiffchaffs around, two were singing as we arrived and eight is more than we would have estimated had we not been ringing. The Green
Woodpecker was an unusual capture at this site, a nice bird. A few mostly resident species made up the capture. The last bird processed, a Goldcrest had
been ringed elsewhere so we have knowing where to look forward to.

One of the 38 Long-tailed Tits captured this morning
Sightings 38 Species: Three Teal flew up from the stream as Ian put the bridge in place and two squabbling Water Rails were heard at the same time. The scrub
was full of birds as we put the nets up most being Long-tailed Tits. During the morning several groups
and flocks of birds were moving through the scrub mostly going towards the reed bed. Overhead
early were several small flocks of Redwing flying about that soon disappeared.
Single numbers of both Redpoll and
Siskin called as they flew around. On a net round something big and brown launched itself out of the reed bed into a net. It proved to be disappointingly a
female pheasant that rolled out of the net before Gina got to it but we can't ring them anyway, fortunately it didn't go through the net!. We were quite busy so we probably missed a few.
