25/10 Greenham Common Western Enclosure

It looked ok early this morning. It had been raining in the night but it had stopped. On the drive down Bury's Bank Road a fine mist formed on the windscreen. I decided as I was out to drive to the enclosure and see what conditions were like. There was fine mist falling but some crests were calling in the bushes so I started putting up a net. As I was putting it up it started to rain a little. Ian joined me and we put up a second net. Soon after it stopped raining. As the weather was iffy we decided to leave it at two nets.  The ringing oracle  Reg Smith arrived and predicted we would capture three birds! Generally it was quiet bird-wise and despite hearing several crest only three 1st CY male Goldcrest capture during the two hour session. On a couple of walk rounds the best bird seen was a Chiffchaff busily feeding in a rose bush. Not as many Redwings flying about today and the odd Redpoll or two. Looks like the show is nearly over here for another year but I will continue into November, you never know something unusual or even usual might turns up. The good news is that when I called in at 616 the sunflower seed feeder was empty, Chaffinches were feeding on the ground below and four species of tits were clearing the last few remaining seeds.
