Overcast and murky early, light wind occasionally
gusting that calmed down during a sunny period before reverting back to
overcast and windy, a very different feel to yesterday with a lot more bird
activity. As of late captures were slow with just four over the two and a half
hour period including three more 1st CY male Goldcrests. In the last six days
and over four sessions we have captured 22 without capturing another species. There
was a lot of reaction to Latvian Redwing song but in the windy weather many bounced
out of the nets. After reducing the depth of the net shelves to increase the
pockets we did manage to capture one late in the session; the last bird
captured before the wind increased. We have a thrush net and every year we
forget to use it; might try tomorrow so see if it makes any difference.

Sightings
33 Species: a lot more movement over today, started with four cormorants just
after arrival. Redwings were more active than yesterday and two Fieldfares
flew in late morning also a couple of Starling flock flew west. Several
unidentifiable silent finches flew over; just black silhouettes against the
cloud unfortunately. The odd one that did call proved to be either Redpoll or
Siskin. Many of the locals, absent yesterday, seen today, must have been
keeping a low profile in the dank conditions.
