The first coldish day
of the winter and a blustery breeze. Compared to 2016’s matching visit the
capture total was nearer to previous years, not sure of the low total for
winter 13/14, probably similar weather to that on this visit. Early captures
consisted of tits, mostly Coal Tits. Then Greenfinches started coming, there
are good numbers of these at the feeder each time I top up with food. It
tailed off a little as the breeze increased and became more blustery with the
wind direction changing frequently. Meanwhile the nets in the scrub provided
variety although we were unable to get Redwings and winter finches low enough
for a chance of capture. Just before nets down, a flurry of mostly Blue Tits
and the first Great Tits of the morning arrived at the feeder. A good session, the
uncomfortable cold, windy conditions perhaps a reminder of things to come.
