Session:
Headlines: After recent visits
we started with little expectation of a good capture. The first round produced
five: three Great Tits, a Long-tailed Tit and a Blue Tit and it looked as if this expectation might be true. The following rounds
continued in a similar vein and it was noticeable that Great Tit numbers were building. From about 10:00hrs
this changed as more Blue Tit began arriving also more Coal Tits. We captured
three Chaffinches but only the two females were ring-able, the male captured
having grotty foot. It is the second time we have captured the post fledging Nuthatch ringed on a nest box about 20metres from the feeder. We ring quite
few pulli Nuthatch in the boxes here but post fledging captures are scarce. Last
year’s visit 08, whilst having a lower total, had a greater variety of
species. A look at the totals for this visit over the ten years since this
feeder was erected shows it to be the second best total. In summary it looks
like Great Tit were disbursing, that Blue Tit spent time on territory before
visiting the feeder and the Long-tailed
Tits being “new” birds probably have not set up territory yet; a busy and
rewarding session.
